January 2014

Brenda Grady, a Fore Women Golf Association member for many years, lost her battle to leukemia on January 25, 2014. Debbie Wittenben, her friend of 40 years, shared her remembrances of Brenda:

Brenda loved golf and the Forewomen Golf Association.  We joined together in the late 90's.  She would introduce herself to everyone she met on the golf course man or woman and tell them about our wonderful golf club. She brought several members to FWGA. Chris Negus, for one, who we met at Buchanan playing with her husband and Kathy Karste plus several other ladies from Lone Tree in Antioch.

Brenda was the most glamorous golfer I knew.  She came to play in full on make-up and jewelry. She looked so gorgeous you might think she was going straight to a dinner party after golf.  Maybe she was.

One of Brenda's proudest golf moments was when she shot a birdie on the 7th hole at Pebble Beach. She was playing in her husband Quentin's company tournament and he got to see this. The spotter at the hole told her it was almost a hole in one.  What a thrill for her!   She received a plaque acknowledging her closest to the pin honor with a framed picture of the 7th hole at Pebble Beach.  It hung proudly in her living room.

Early in her play with Forewomen, she got an Eagle on the 9th hole at Diablo Hills. She hit a long drive to the right that travelled the cart path all the way down pin high to the flag just off the cart path.  She then hit a blind 9 iron over a hill that looked really good, but we couldn't see where it landed.  We went to the green and saw no ball.  We were looking everywhere, when finally someone said "Hey it is in the hole".  Wow, did we do a little golf dance on that one!  I repeat this fun story to others when we play that hole quite often. So fun.

I loved Brenda's spirit and laughter.  I can still hear her contagious and slightly wicked giggle.  We would come in from playing a round of golf and it would not be unusual for Brenda to say "I think I will have a dirty Martini".  Wicked giggle :-)

She was a very talented and acclaimed artist.  She mostly painted in water colors and her house was filled with her spectacular work. She also generously gave her paintings to many lucky people. She painted a beautiful water color of the 7th hole at Oakhurst Country Club and donated it for the FWGA annual auction a few years back.

If you were lucky enough to share a cart with Brenda then you got to hear her glow about her children and granddaughter.  She would always have photos to share. She was so proud of them.  And you would also get to hear a joke or two. Always funny and a bit racy too. She loved to laugh and make others laugh with her.  She made golf fun.

Probably my most thankful memory is when Brenda found a Mother and litter of beautiful kittens after playing golf at Las Positas Golf Course.  She called me for help trapping them to get them spayed and adopted.   She was relentless about saving these cats. We trapped two beautiful kittens just 3 days before Christmas. With no takers or facilities able to take them, she took two herself and gave them a loving home. She worked with Community Concern for Cats and got all the others (4 more) trapped spayed and adopted. She even convinced me to adopt one beautiful kitten, and my Lucy will always remind me of my wonderful friend Brenda.

She was truly one of a kind and a very very special lady.  She will be missed by many!

Services will be held in Sacramento on February 7th and 8th.  More info will follow.

2014 Holiday Brunch Preview

These are just a few of the event photos, so be sure to follow us at FWGA on Facebook for all event photos.

Our Holiday Brunch was held on Saturday, December 14th at the very festive Round Hill Country Club in Alamo. As soon as you entered the club you were captured by the beautiful decorations and immediately caught up in the holiday spirit.

Holiday6                     Members and guests were treated to a wonderful brunch, shopping and a fashion show put on by our very attractive members all wearing the latest golf attire.

Tami Waddell announced the new FWGA Board members and passed on the gravel on to Della Guiterrez, the new incoming president.

The money FWGA raised throughout the year, mainly at our Annual Tournament in October, was presented to our 2013 charities, The First Tee of Oakland, and Stand Against Domestic Violence.

April Kenyon introduced three young golfers from First Tee, who each thanked us for our donation and told us what this program has done to help them.

A representative from Stand Against Domestic Violence also thanked us for our donation.  She told us about the services they provide and shared first hand stories of those who are helped by our donations.

The event was a great success thanks to Sue Derby, the outgoing Events Board Member and all her committee members.

With everyone in the holiday spirit, we all left happy to have spent time with our golf friends, appreciating the feeling of giving and looking forward to great golf in 2014!

President's New Year Letter 2014

Oh my, its January 1, my head is spinning from all the fun.  As I woke this morning begging for coffee, I spied the last piece of holiday toffee.  Sitting at the computer on this holiday, happy,  I’m not a commuter! Reflecting on the year just past and wondering how to make this one better than last.  I ask myself these questions, pondering with reflection. Will I resolve to lose a few pounds, or vow to play more rounds?  Maybe combine the two and walk more courses rather than a few.  Shall I buy a new set of clubs, or stop blaming my current set for all my flubs?  Upgrade my wardrobe, buy new shoes, or take more lessons to correct my putting blues?  No matter the decision, no matter the goal, FWGA is in my heart and soul. Happy New Year to all!

We have some fabulous events planned for 2014.  Thirteen tournaments which include two 9-hole events and two invitational tournaments.  The first invitational event will be held at Saddle Creek in Copperopolis on 4/26 and Greenhorn Creek in Angel’s Camp on 4/27.  These invitational events are an opportunity to play these great courses and bring a friend, spouse or partner.  The second invitational event will be held in the Monterey area beginning with San Juan Oaks in Hollister on 9/13, Pasadera Country Club in Monterey on 9/14 and rounding out the weekend with the newly remodeled Poppy Hills.  Liz Riddle has done a great job in scheduling these events, and if you have never been to an away event, they are a blast and a great option for a golf vacation.  If you can’t make it to an away event, sign up for another tournament or casual play date.

In March, we will conduct our general meeting.  This gathering kicks off the season and provides membership with helpful information for the years’ events, casual golfing opportunities, and charities supported in 2014.  Tee times will be arranged for those wanting to play after the meeting.  If you are new to the club or, have never attended the general meeting, this is a great venue to meet fellow members and learn more about FWGA.

Lastly, all members are welcome to join in on the events, and please remember that this organization runs on volunteers and we need you.  Sign up to host a play date, or co-direct a tournament.  There are many of us who have directed a tournament in the past, and would be happy to lend support for anyone new to this process.  We also need assistance at our main meeting events such as the Annual event in October and the Holiday party in December.

Any of your time is appreciated and welcomed.  You may contact Liz Riddle if you wish to assist in directing/ co-directing or assisting in registration or pictures for a tournament.  Contact Duayna Pucci for assisting in the General Meeting, Annual Event or Holiday Party.

Happy New Year,

Della Gutierrez

President, FWGA
