Play More Golf

Forewomen Golf is about providing more opportunities to play golf at all levels.  Every year we offer over 250 play dates for our members.

FWGA encourages new players to join and learn more about golf through clinics and through our Emerging Golfers Group, we lovingly call EGG's. If you are a competitve golfer, we have a great tournament schedule, crown a Club Champion and recognize great players. Tournaments also feature fun play for the less serious players.

FWGA also raises money for charity and hosts several fun social events including:

  • Membership Breakfast Meeting featuring a guest speaker and shopping!
  • Annual Scramble Tournament with cart decorating contest, raffle prizes, auction and more shopping!
  • Holiday Brunch that includes a fashion show and a little more shopping!

You can belong to one or all of our groups and participate in as many events as your schedule will allow.

Join our group, play more golf, raise money for charity, make new friends and shop!

A Party to Remember - 2012 FWGA Annual!

DSC_0005

Girls do want to have fun and did we have fun.  I have to say to finally get to play in our Annual was exciting.  My team, Kathleen Clancy, Robin Dozier, Careen Carter, were a blast and we laughed our way around the course.  The morning started with the pre round festivities - 4 hole putting contest, Cart Decorating Contest and Costume contest.

Piper Shaull hosted the Putting Contest that Dublin Ranch set up for us.  Sally  Panella had a hole in one for a final score of 8 and Denise Qualls had a score of 8.

Rita Steele and Tina Higashi, Past FWGA Presidents, judged the Cart and Costume Contest.  Sue Derby, Pat Charles, Joan McCarthy and Lucy Subica won the cart decorating contest with their great Silent Auction Shopping carts.

Sally Panella, Betty McCabe, Alice Schultz and Bev Redfield won for their great costumes.  And I have to say they did play in the costumes the entire round - we were right behind them.

One of the highlights of the round was hearing that Charlene Hastings had a hole in one on Hole 13, 130 yards with her 8 iron.

It was fun seeing them celebrate as they played.  One of my favorite things about Dublin Ranch is the ability to see other foursomes as you play.  Made for quite a party atomsphere as you heard cheering and laughing all around the course.

The format for the day is a scramble and everyone has to contribute to your teams score.  I had alot of fun with my team showing them some of the strategy.  When to use a mulligan or a hand grenade is very important and we used ours well. The field was divided into 3 flights.DSC_0045

In the first flight the winning team was Gooch Foster, CharlotteMcconkie, Karen Smith and LInda Dobb, and 2nd place went to April Kenyon, Pam Koch, Charlene Hastings and Denise Qualls.

The second flight was won by Sandy Gonzalez, Liz Riddle, Merideth Weiland, Della Gutierrez (who did not play due to back injury but joined us for dinner). And in second place was the team of Tami Waddell, Kathleen Clancy, Robin Dozier and Careen Carter.DSC_0038

The third flight first place team was Betty McCabe, Alice Schultz, Sally Panella, Bev Redfield.  And in second place the team of Rita Steele, Mimi Jacobs-Johnson, Masayo Jiang, and Hyeja Busse.

The closest to the pin awards were divided into 3 holes based on course handicap.  With 2 places at each hole there were 6 winners.

As part of our Annual we also give out a variety of awards to our members.  Our Most Improved Player of the Year was Meg Walsh who dropped her index from 34.5 to 24.3.  She attributed her success to being the Board Member responsible for our Emerging Golfers Group and "getting back to the basics!"

We also honored our Member of the Year.  This is the person that we feels represents FWGA on the golf course within our club and in other golf events.  Michelle Ross was honored with this.  As a low handicapper she always plays with anyone and is a joy to play with as well as representing FWGA in a number of NCGA golf events and doing very well.

We recognized 2 Volunteers of the Year.  Sarah Good was honored for her assistance in negotiating lower tournament fees and teaching us the lesson to always negotiate.  Della Gutierrez was recognized as Volunteer as the Year.  Having chaired tournaments for 2 years she works consistently on the day to day running of our tournaments including the challenge of pairings and listening to everyone requests!  Thanks to both of you for your time given to FWGA!

One of the most exciting announcements of the evening though is our Club Champion and Players Champion.  Piper Shaull announced that the change in the Club Championship program went well and the Club Champion was Julie Campiotti and the Players Champion was Della Gutierrez.  Thanks to everyone who participated and look forward to having everyone sign up next year.  As a new addition to the Tournament Program we had a Birdie Board going.   Everyone who got a Birdie during a tournament was listed on the board and at the end of the season the person with most Birdies recieved an award.  Kristina Ramos was very excited to be the Birdie Winner!

Each of these members recieved an FWGA bag tag.

Image002So be sure and stay tuned to see how you could earn one of these great bag tags in 2013. Renewal for next year has started.   Be sure to mark your calendar for March 9 at Boundary Oaks.  This is always a great kick off event to find out what is happening in the coming year.

A big part of the evening is our Silent Auction and Raffle.  Many great items were offered up for
silent auction and raffle in support of our charities.  We will announce the amount raised this year and  make our donations at our Holiday Brunch on December 8, at Round Hill Country Club.  Be sure to sign up now.

All in all it was a great day and lots of fun.  As people came in from their round many watched the Giants game, visited with friends and watched their silent auction items.

Mark your calendar for next year.  The plan is to have it October 13 at Dublin Ranch.  Our Events Chair Sue Derby and Chairities Chair Kathleen Clancy would love to have your help in making this another great event.

18 Hole Tournament - By Kristina Ramos

Cooler bayside conditions provided a respite from inland heat as an intimate group of  golfers teed it up on August 19 at Monarch Bay's Tony Lema course.   The eleven ladies were the 18-hole contestants in FWGA's second combined 9 and 18 hole tournament of the season.  The format was two person better ball, and several teams went impressively low.  First place honors went to Kelly Tague and her partner, Blind Draw, who was ultimately revealed to be Sarah Good.  Their score of 60 vaulted them past the second place team of Sandy Gonzalez and Liz Riddle who carded a cool 62.  Rounding out the team prizes were Della Gutierrez and Charlene Hastings with a score of 66, good enough to grab the third place prize.

Two closest to the pin awards were up for grabs, but only one was claimed, as the green at hole number 4 eluded being hit despite the ladies' best efforts.  But hole number 17 was no match for Tami Waddell, whose tee shot landed 8 feet, 3 inches from the hole, the closest of the day.

Sandy Gonzalez's birdie on the fourteenth hole earned her another notch on FWGA's season-long Birdie Board competition.

Combined Results to follow...

FWGA: Calippe Tournament Results

By Terri Malatesta and Julie Campiotti

It was a hot day for a tournament but we all survived Whack & Hack format at Callippe. With this
format we had 4 person teams and each team counted a low net ball and a high net ball. However, if
one of the team members got a net BIRDIE, then they counted the two low net balls. After tallying the
scores the winners were:

1st Place
Kelly Tague
Jan Moura
Merideth Wieland
Tim Wieland

2nd Place
Pat White
Priscilla Kramer
Kristina Ramos
Karen Billeci

Closest to the Pin:
Karen Billeci #6
Kristina Ramos #13

We also had chipins from: Robyn Jones, Mimi Johnson-Jacobs & Merideth Wieland. Kristina Ramos had
two natural birdies and Julie Campiotti shot a birdie on the 18th hole after sinking a 30 ft putt. Most of
you who have played Callippe will agree that 18 has to be the hardest hole but it is rated #2 hardest at
this course. . . hummmmm! Hope to see you all at the next tournament!

FWGA: Emerging Golfers Sunday Play Date and Clinic

By Meg Walsh, FWGA Emerging Golfers Director

The EGG (Emerging Golfers Group) Sunday clinic was held at Pleasanton Golf Center on Sunday July 29, 2012.  Dave Fowler, PGA Professional went over the basics of chipping from 15 yards and 30 yards outside the green.  Participants then moved to the bunker, where Dave instructed everyone to place 2 to 4 inches of sand in between their clubhead and the ball in order to get the ball out of the sand!  Everyone made it out in no more than 2 swings!   The ladies followed the one hour clinic with 9-holes of play where they had an opportunity to implement their new skills and concepts on the course.

Please check the EGG Schedule for the next clinic or play date!

FWGA Mid-Summer Tournament (9 and 18 Hole Combined)

Las Positas 9 Hole Tournament

Tournament Directors: Joan McCarthy and Sue Derby

Saturday, July 14th, FWGA held it first ever Summer Joint Tournament. Nine enthusiastic
members played the 9 hole executive course and had a great time. This beautiful course,
though short on yardage is very long on challenge. Course management is the name of
the game!
The format was “Joker’s Wild”. Each player was assigned a card suit, i.e. spade, club,
etc. Each hole has a suit card placed at the tee box. At the end of play at each hole the
player who matches the suit is the team score for that hole. One hole has a Joker and is a
wild card so the players can choose whose score to use. The team with the lowest team
score is the winner. The winning team was Jill Martin-Smith; Cheryl Ramirez and Leta
Maco with a team score of 40.
We also had prizes for the two lowest numbers of putts. There was a three-way tie, each
player having 17 putts in 9 holes. After a card off the winners were Cheryl Ramirez and
Gail Romero.
Also for the first time, since we were joining the 18 hole group, there was a prize given
to the lowest score of one 9 hole team and one 18 hole team that were randomly grouped,
Gail Romero was the 9 hole winner.
The after party was great, with over 40 FWGA members gathering on the patio to
celebrate the day and the winners.
Several of the 9 hole players had never played in a tournament before, but I’m sure it
won’t be their last one.

Las Positas 18-Hole Tournament

Tournament Directors - Careen Carter, Tina Higashi, Kathy Lee

After a week of weather with days in the triple digits, 31 of us had a beautiful, sunny day in the 70's with a slight breeze to keep us cool. The turn-out was great and we saw some fantastic scores with our individual stroke play format. In Flight A, our winners were: 1st place - Laura Sato, net 60; 2nd place - Piper Shaull, net 70; 3rd place - Michele Ross, net 71. In Flight B, 1st place - Liz Riddle, net 69; 2nd place - Pam Koch, net 74; 3rd place - Aileen Hodgkin, net 74. In Flight C, 1st place - Merideth "Pink" Wieland, net 69; 2nd place - Sandy Gonzalez, net 70; 3rd place - Chris Negus, net 78. Our other contests for the day included two Closest to the Pin holes, won by Tami Waddell and Piper Shaull; Longest Drive won by Piper Shaull (big winner of the day!) and Shortest Drive won by Daphne Olson. There was a 9 hole event held concurrently, and we all enjoyed after-golf camaraderie on Beeb's patio for awards and refreshments. Thanks to everyone who participated and helped to make the day an overwhelming success!
