A Look to the Past!

I can’ believe we are already through the end of June!  Golf Season is high speed and the board is actively planning for our Annual Tournament on October 21.  I hope you are getting your foursome together!  You won’t want to  miss out.  It is also the time that we start the process of planning for the next year including selecting Board of Directors members for 2013.  In looking back over the changes I have seen in my few years with FWGA, and changes that we see coming, I asked Judi Buti-Dunton to share her perspective as a past president and active FWGA member on the changes she had seen in FWGA.

FWGA is built on a foundation of change, focused on meeting the changing needs of our members.   I’ve seen much change since I joined FWGA in 2000 and was fortunate to be a part of many initiatives that advanced our association.  I’ve observed how each board faces different challenges, issues and expected outcomes.  In my opinion, this is the reason why FWGA is such a dynamic organization.  We are not afraid of change, of taking risk to improve our association.

W hen our membership statistics showed that our high handicap membership was on the rise, our Emerging Golfers Group ( EGG)  program was started.  The success of this program has been recognized by NCGA and the Northern California Women’s Summit, and emulated by other women’s groups.  When our members wanted a fun venue for competition, FWGA offered our own version of the Golf Channel’s The Big Break.  Our general meeting with coffee, coffee cake and a treasurer’s report developed into our present meeting filled with information about the upcoming year’s events and so many shopping opportunities.  A holiday get-together for a few FWGA friends grew into a fabulous fashion show and brunch with … more shopping opportunities.  And to reach out to the working women of our group, the TwiLite golf venue was developed –a favorite of mine!   Each one of these FWGA successes started as an idea, a challenge or a need for change.  The members of our FWGA Board of Directors took risks and found success.  We as FWGA members reap the benefit.

I ask you to join me in showing our appreciation and support to our present Board and our hard working volunteers.  Let us thank our volunteers for continuing the tradition of providing so many golf opportunities, listening to us as members, facing the challenges of our association, and taking risk to fore-ward FWGA.

–Judy Buti Dunton      2006-2007 FWGA President

I hope you will continue to enjoy FWGA and the opportunities it offers to play golf with other women.  And please feel free to get involved as a volunteer at any level.

Tami Waddell

FWGA President

FWGA 2012 Willow Park 18-Hole Tournament

By Della Gutierrez
We had a beautiful day filled with sunshine, Deer and Wild Turkey's.  I don't know about the rest of you, but I cleaned out my bag of balls at Willow, that blasted creek ate them!  Thanks to Jill for helping with the scoring and Sandy and Liz too.  The format was 3's & 5's so only the par 3's & 5's counted for the game.
Alleen came in 1st with a score of 46, low gross with a 94 and, as if that was not enough, she also won low putts with a 33.  Great day for Alleen
Hayja came in 2nd,  Dee and Masayo came in 3rd and 4th
Roberta won closest to the Pin on # 3 and Della #13
Dee, Masayo & Roberta had Birdies so they will be posted on the Birdie Board on the FWGA web site.
& low net to Mayaso with a 63.
Dee and Della both had chip-ins
Thanks for coming out and we hope to see you all at another event soon!

Have you been to a Clinic?

This is the third clinic the FWGA group has had with Barry Brynjulsen and his "side kick", Mattie, These clinics have been arranged by Claudia Motal, our clinic chair, to cover many of the aspects of golf from pitching and putting to sand traps and bunker play, to use of woods and various iron shots. These clinics are loaded with information of how to improve your golf game at a very reasonable price and should not be missed. They are held at the beautiful Blackhawk Country Club which has excellent facilities for working with all aspects of the game. Yesterday was our clinic on pitching and putting, a very important aspect of the game where many pointers were emphasized of how to lower your putting strokes, etc. There are several other clinics scheduled for the remainder of this season so check your calendars, and join us for a fun and informative "tutoring" session with Barry and Mattie!

Mattie instructing the pitching aspects to Linda Rothchild, Meredith Wieland, and Trudy Engeldinger

Barry demonstrating techniques of putting to Meredith Wieland and Linda Rothchild

To sign up for future clinics you can check the Clinics Page.  Links to the sign up pages are on the page.  Each clinic opens for registration 6 weeks prior to the clinic date and are non-refundable.

FWGA 2012 Monterey Invitational Tournament

Submitted by Della Gutierrez, FWGA Tournament Director

Do you long to get away from it all and spend a few days with some old friends and meet some new ones? Have you ever played any of the courses on the Monterey Peninsula? Del Monte or Poppy Hills?  Well if not, it's about time for you do something for yourself and pack a bag, hop in the car and go pick up your friend and head for Monterey for three days of golf, gals and wonderful fun in the sun.
FWGA planned this three day invitational event, and you may bring your best buddy who may not be a FWGA member.  You can bring your husband or main squeeze to these events, or just leave them at home to feed the dog & cats!  You may choose to just play one or two days, or hang in for all three.
Picture this, on Saturday September 15th, which is my birthday by the way (all gifts and or adult beverage purchased will be accepted!), you will tee off at San Juan Oaks for our Rally for the Cure awareness event.  After golf, we head to the Best Western on Abrego St. where we have reserved a private room equipped with a kitchen, and will toast those who tore it up on the course and have a snack or two.
When you rise on Sunday September 16th you will need to have a hearty breakfast because you are setting your GPS to Del Monte Golf Course.
On Sunday night before retiring, take a few minutes to stretch or soak in a hot tub because on Monday morning September 17, the icing on the cake and the cherry on top is Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach.  If you have never played Poppy Hills I would definitely put this on your list.  I played it for the first time last year and the course is truly a blast and one not to be missed.
Do this for yourself, your sanity and overall well being.  Below are the details for the hotels rooms we have blocked, mention the Fore Women Golf Association when booking and I can't wait to see all of you with your best buds or the S.O.'s!

Copperopolis Weekend Getaway

Each year between Easter and Mother's Day, FWGA has an away weekend in Copperopolis.  We usually try to play SaddleCreek and Greenhorn.  Members stay in houses they rent for the weekend, cottages at the golf course or hotels in Angels Camp.  It is a great start to the golf season.  This year was no exception.  Here is the write up for the first day of the tournament.

One of my guests sampled all the delicious food and tried a Cosmo, Lemon Drop and Chocolatini! I think I can safely say a good time was had by all. As Bo Rothchild said "see you all in Monterey."

Dee Tuohy

After leaving the cocktail and appetizer party, some members ventured into Angels Camp for dinner, others went back to the SaddleCreek club house for dinner and some had a putting contest back at the Saddlecreek putting green followed by a competitive game of Mexican Train Dominoes.

Another FWGA tournament is in the bag.  Lots of fun was had, balls lost in fields of daisies, water and mud in bunkers and hazards that eat balls!  But beside all of that a great day was had by all and it even tried to warm up.

Franklin Canyon Tournament

Another beautiful day on the Golf Course.  A little worried the day before as the rain poured down but Sunday dawned bright and sunny, with cart path only being the only result of the rain.   A great tournament hosted by our twin fashion models - Sally and Betty.

The format for the day was an individual game of Three Little Piggies.  Players got to throw out their worse three holes(net)  Wouldn't we like to do that every round?

Two flights were awarded prizes.  For Flight A, Michelle Ross took Low Gross overall with an 80 which included 2 birdies - way to go Michelle.

Michelle beat out Kristina Ramos for first place in Flight A for Three Little Piggies by a cardoff.

Tami Waddell took third and Linda Rothchild fourth with a three way card off for fourth.

Piper Shaull won longest drive in the fairway for Flight A.  Dee Tuohy won closest to the pin.

For Flight B, First Place for Three Little Piggies went to a card off between Della Gutierrez and Linda Dobb, with Della taking first.

Kay Middleton took 3rd place in Flight B as well as Low Gross in Flight B and Longest Drive!  Way to go Kay!

Did you realize FWGA organizes league play up to five days a week?  We have weekend/weekday 18 hole play and weekend/weekday 9 hole play.  Plus, we start twilight play on Wednesday, April 4th.  Come join in the fun, meet other members of the group and watch that index go lower and lower and lower . . .

What makes this program successful is your help in hostessing and organizing tee times.  As hostess, you get to decide where you want to play and at what time.  Please help out our coordinators and let them know when you can volunteer for this very important activity.  Our dedicated coordinators are in touch with you weekly so look for emails from Pat White (18 hole weekday), Terri Malatesta (18 hole weekend), Joanne Larson (9 hole weekend), Frances Fischer (9-hole weekday) and Jill Martin-Smith (Twilight).

If you are not receiving emails from these ladies contact me at kclancy@futureplanning.com and let me know what type of play you are interested in.  The website calendar lists all of the activities as well.  When you find yourself with a day free, or want to mix it up with a different group, all the information you need is on the website.  As a reminder, please contact the hostess ahead of time to ensure enough there is a spot for you on the day of play.

Happy golfing!
